It has emerged that a potential prosecution witness in the Chris Huhne case was arrested by police over the weekend.
The Times has reported that lawyer Constance Briscoe – who is one of Britain’s few female black judges and said to be a confidante of Huhne’s former wife Vicki Pryce – was arrested at her home and was released on bail pending further inquiries.
Last week both Huhne and his ex wife attended a series of court appearances , conducted under a reporting blackout, which resulted in their trial on charges of perverting the course of justice being adjourned until January ‘for legal reasons.’
The grounds for Briscoe’s arrest are not known, but last January she was said by the Daily Mail to have played a’ key role’ in the decision by the CPS to press charges against the couple.
Police were said to have previously interviewed her regarding the allegations that Mr Huhne had persuaded his former wife to take speeding points on his behalf and she said at the time:
“I have been interviewed by the police. I told them what I know. I have nothing to hide. I had a clear duty to tell the police what I knew, and I did.”
A spokeswoman for the Office for Judicial Complaints said today that Constance Briscoe was suspended from the judiciary pending the outcome of the police investigation into the allegations against her.
