February 27, 2018
By

Samuel Jenman

National Apprenticeship Week will take place from 5 to 9 March 2018. The Week, which is led and co-ordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service, will celebrate the positive impact of apprenticeships and showcase how apprenticeships work for individuals, employers, local communities and the wider economy. The theme is ‘Apprenticeships Work’ to showcase how apprenticeships work for individuals, employers, local communities and the wider economy. Former Southampton FC apprentice Samual Jenman was previously on a scholarship with Eastleigh Football Club with the aim of signing a professional contract – the apprenticeship with Southampton has allowed him to continue working in an industry that he loves. Sam was winner in the Intermediate Apprentice of the Year Category for the South East at the National Apprenticeship Awards 2017. We managed to catch up with Samual as he talks about National Apprenticeship Week and more!

Do you think National Apprenticeship Week will help kids decide what they want in a career?

I believe the National Apprenticeship Week will defiantly help people decide what they want in a career. The week is perfect for showing people how beneficial apprenticeships can be, individuals can gather lots of information whilst being shown many of the opportunities an apprenticeship could give them.

What would you say to someone if they were thinking to become an apprentice?

I would tell them how beneficial apprenticeships are, my apprenticeship was the best decision I have ever made. Starting your career with an apprenticeship is perfect for learning key skills whilst gaining a qualification and getting paid a wage. My apprenticeship also allowed me to grow massive amounts of confidence and motivation.

How was it winning ‘Intermediate Apprentice of the Year’ Category for the South East at the National Apprenticeship Awards?

Winning South East Intermediate Apprentice of the Year was a massive achievement for myself. Being rewarded for all the hard work I have put into my apprenticeship was a great feeling, it allowed me to really appreciate how many opportunities my apprenticeship has given me and how much I have learned over the past year.

What it’s like being a part of a massive organisation such as Southampton Football Club?

Working for Southampton Football Club has been incredible. Southampton Football Club have a vision of turning potential into excellence, the staff academy which I am apart of encapsulates Potential into Excellence and mirrors everything the football club try to achieve with their football academy with us, the staff. It is a great place to work, I have been given many opportunities and endless amounts of opportunity to learn and develop.

Would you say the pay for apprenticeships is fair?

The apprenticeship wage for me is defiantly fair, being paid a wage whilst gaining key experience and developing a new career is a great thing.

How much have you learned while being at Southampton Football Club?

I have learned endless amounts while being at Southampton Football Club, my education was provided through St Mary’s Training centre, St Mary’s Training Centre offers internal learning and development, their strategic vision and mission is to turn Potential into Excellence in everything they do, by engaging and promoting the Southampton Way. They supported me in completing my Business Administration Level 2 qualification.

What are your ambitions for the future?

My ambitions for the future are to keep learning and developing within the sporting industry, I want to one day become a manager and lead a team myself.
