Eastleigh college students win medals in chef competition

March 8, 2018

Eastleigh College Hospitality and Catering students competed in the UK’s largest chef competition to showcase their talents, and won an astonishing 11 medals including the desired Gold.

The aspiring chefs competed against apprentices, students and professional chefs from around the country during a two day competition at Hotelympia in London. The students, who have worked around the clock to prepare for the competition, put their skills to the test and demonstrated their valuable abilities that are sought by employers.

Similar to the environment expected in the workplace, the young chefs were put under pressure to deliver to a high-standard, using skills they’ve learned on their course, while using their initiative where required. The students completed various tasks from bread roll shaping, fish mongery and butchery, to cocktail making and table laying.

Returning back to college with a gold medal, Level 3 Hospitality and Catering student Georgia, was tasked with table laying and recommending wines to accompany meals. Georgia comments on her success after her first competition,

‘It was a great experience and I really enjoyed it. If I want to work front of house in my career, I’ll need to know how tables should be laid in industry. I had to think on my feet and improvise during the competition.’

Greg Cheeseman, Lecturer in Hospitality and Catering is proud of the students success and explains,

‘Some of our students were taken out of their comfort zone and have proved their potential. In this industry it’s important to network and get as much exposure as you can which in turn will help secure employment, which is why our students regularly participate in competitions and field trips.’
