Lakeside Country Park needs volunteers to help clear the park of Himalayan Balsam

June 27, 2018

Eastleigh’s Lakeside Country Park is seeking volunteers to help clear the park of Himalayan Balsam.

The Himalayan Balsam Pull takes place at the 22-hectares park in Eastleigh over the Summer; the next one takes place on Wednesday, July 4 from 10am to noon, with additional balsam pulls (if required) scheduled for Wednesday, July 18 and 25.

Himalayan Balsam is a non-native invasive plant which spreads quickly and forms dense thickets which shade out other flora species. It can impact riverbanks and streams, ponds and lakes, wet woodlands, ditches and damp meadows.

Lakeside Country Park is owned and managed by Eastleigh Borough Council and offers a perfect space to escape the hustle of urban living with its lakes, wet meadow and woodland. The park has a diverse range of wildlife from birds, insects and small mammals to fox, deer and bat species.

Volunteers are asked to wear suitable outdoor clothing. Gloves and refreshments will be provided.
