Local business makes room for Props

George Lawley and Laura Chrismas attempt to restrain enraged tactical voter.

Local self storage company, ready steady store, is supporting The Sarah Siddons Fan Club Theatre Company by donating much needed space at its storage facilities. The local theatre company will use the facilities to house its collection of costume and props. The storage company, based on Leigh Road, has committed to sponsor The Sarah Siddons Fan Club productions throughout the coming year.

The Fan Club takes its name from the 18th century actress Sarah Siddons who was famous for her dramatic ‘attitudes’. The club is well known for its site-specific theatre productions, which are performed in historic and heritage settings, bringing to life real events from the past.

Cheryl Butler, artistic director at The Sarah Siddons Fan Club, says:

“We are unusual as a theatre company because we do not have a venue and all our work is performed outside at places such as the medieval town of Southampton and Netley Abbey or in historic churches and museums. Over the years we have acquired masses of costumes from Tudor outfits, used for portraying Elizabeth I and Henry VIII, to uniforms worn for a play about the Titanic. We had outgrown our costume store so the facilities that ready steady store has provided are perfect, giving us peace of mind our costumes are safe and damp free”.

Andrew Cotterill, area manager at ready steady store, adds:

‘The work carried out by the Sarah Siddons Fan Club is invaluable to the local community and we fully support local arts initiatives in the area. It has been very rewarding working with the Sarah Siddons and we look forward to developing our relationship by supporting the theatre company at future performances.’

The Fan Club is already in production for its next show, ‘Time Travellers’, which is being performed in several historical buildings in Southampton on 27 March. An aviation theme is being planned for its main summer show ‘Biggles & Co’ and the club will also be out on the streets with its infamous Halloween and Christmas Ghost walks.
