Recession hit smokers are behind the latest crime wave in Hampshire according to the Police.
They say demand for cheap smokes from cash strapped nicotine junkies has resulted in a string of burglaries at commercial premises across the area between July 20 and September 16 during which thousands of pounds worth of cigarettes have been stolen.
These are now being offered for sale in pubs, clubs and workplaces throughout the borough and people are taking advantage of cheap cigarettes without sparing a thought for how they may have been obtained.
Detective Sergeant Damon Kennard said: “I understand that it can be very tempting to buy cheap cigarettes, but I would strongly urge smokers to consider where they have come from.
“It is very likely that these have been stolen.
“I would like to hear from anyone who has information about those selling cheap cigarettes or about those committing these burglaries.”
Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact Lyndhurst CID on 101 or you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
However the best way to cut down on the cost of smoking is still to give up all together – not only is smoking expensive and bad for your health but also cigarettes are the number one cause of fatal house fires!
