Emergency services were warning motorists to take care in freezing conditions tonight and tomorrow (Friday) morning as temperatures across Hampshire plummet.
Velvet bus services were suspended this evening and Eastleigh (Southampton) airport was closed due to ice on the runway.
Many schools were closed today and are expected to remain closed for Friday.
The centre of town had been noticeably quiet with far fewer cars normal and those that did brave the conditions were mostly being driven with due care to the icy road surfaces.
The bus station was also eerily still for a Thursday – especially as the weekly market in Leigh Road had been cancelled.
Both bin collections and postal deliveries in the town centre were also disrupted.
There were signs of an improved response to snow clearance following last January’s cold snap –this time footpaths in the town centre were being cleared with the use of a mini JCB.
An end to the freeze is expected on late Friday into Saturday when rain is forecast to move into the area.
