Van Fire on Station Hill

Fire broke out at a town centre office block last night. Firefighters were called to Horizon house on station hill at about 9.45pm after a Transit van caught ablaze in the underground car park of the three storey building.

The Transit Van was severely damaged and the fire had spread to the ceiling joists of the building which is adjacent to the proposed site of a 60 bed hotel.

A total of three fire engines and 15 fire fighters were involved – four of whom had to use breathing apparatus.

This morning the site was cordoned off while the cause was being investigated by the Police.

It is understood that there has been no serious damage to the structure of the building.

This is the second town centre blaze in just over a month, the former Mija Bar in the precinct having also caught fire December 29.

good thing the fire did not get a hold. It looks like a new building. Otherwise it might have had to be demolished. Mind you, that might have been good for the hotel (i.e. car parking space.

Doesn’t it remind you of the ‘unfortunate incident’ in which the old Parish Church caught fire? Didn’t someone have plans for it but the council had overturned the planning application?

Please reaquaint me with that occurence as my memory is not quite clear on that specific incident.

Your right Andy, there were plans for it to be turned into flats but the council refused the application and funny enough it burnt down within weeks. Then a few years later what has it become..?? Hmmmmm!!
