The council have issued a warning that con artists are trying to scam people into revealing their bank details over the phone with the promise of a council tax rebate:
“A resident of the borough was recently contacted by someone claiming to be from the Council Tax Department of Eastleigh Borough Council. The resident was offered a Council Tax Rebate as they have been consistently paying their Council Tax. The resident was asked to provide their bank details so that the refund could be processed. Fortunately this resident was wary, rang the Council to check and did not provide any bank details.
A Council spokesperson says ”Remember never give your bank details or pin number out to anyone over the phone under any circumstances, not evenanyone claiming to be a police officer or Council employee .If you receive such a telephone call, please contact your local Police station.
If you do receive a telephone call from someone claiming to be from the Council Tax Department and you are unsure if it is genuine, please take their name and advise them you will phone back. “
The Council Tax telephone number is 02380 688470. A member of Council Tax staff will be happy to give advice on this and any other Council tax issues.”
