Twyford Road the A335 – a major access route to the north of the town from M3 junction 12 at Pitmore will be closed for maintenance from The Crescent to the Romsey Road roundabout starting March 6. Plans show there will also be restricted access from Bishopstoke Road Railway Bridge to the roundabout.
However the closures are planned for overnight 19.00 – 06.00
The alternative route advised is to be via Woodside Road.
Although the temporary closure notices at the site indicate the closures are to start from March 6th – there are road signs in place indicating the road will be closed tommorrow night February 16.
The new road of raod works scheduled for this spring will coincide with increased in parking charges planned for the end for this month. Those able to struggle through to the Town Centre will have to pay more to park here when they arrive.
One Newtown resident aged 54, who did not wish to be named, reacted angrily to the news saying:
“Last year when they closed Twyford Road there were no measures put in place to prevent rat-running through the Newtown estate.
Children walk to the Crescent Primary School on the same route that people attempt to ‘rally drive’ through.
Last year one of these idiots ran over Tiddles, our cat.
It’s clear there will be no traffic restrictions again this year
I only hope no one gets killed.”
