Eastleigh council boss pay jumps 6.7%

The details of Eastleigh Chief Executive pay has appeared in a national list of council officers earning more than £100K as right wing libertarian pressure group the ‘Tax Payers Alliance’  publish their annual ‘Town Hall Rich List‘ of the highest paid local government officers in the UK.

According to the TPA, last year Eastleigh’s CEO Bernie Topham received a remuneration package which totalled £129,703 – an inflation busting 6.7% increase – making her the highest paid LGO at the Leigh Road Civic offices – which until yesterday had a homeless family living in its car park.

The total includes pension contributions of £20,000. Her total earnings for 2009/10 were 121,508.

In contrast the CEO of Hampshire County Council Andrew Smith had a 5% pay CUT – although his total pay is still almost £250k.

The CEO of Portsmouth City council received a small rise of 1.8% rise and Southampton 3.4% – although both are paid far more.

However Eastleigh ‘s Chief had a bigger rise and is paid more than the CEO of Winchester, who earns £116 and had a 0.9% rise, Gosport where the CEO’s earnings rose by 1,4% to £105K and Fareham where the Chief Executive’s pay actually FELL 4.1% to £128k.

One Eastleigh resident 54, who did not wish to be named, reacted angrily to the news:

“The governor of the Bank of England is urging pay restraint to keep down inflation and avoid hikes in interest rates – what kind of an example is this?”

Eastleigh is not the only local council to award their CEO’s a massive pay increase; bosses at both New Forest and Test Valley (which covers part of Chandlers Ford) got a whopping extra 13%.

Are you employed by Eastleigh Borough Council? How much did YOUR wages rise last year? Why not tell us below:

Here’s one story you won’t be reading on the front page of ‘Borough News’.

Just received the Borough News this morning and you’re right – it’s not on the front page! (nor anywhere else inside either)

It’s all very well for the Governor of the Bank of England to urge “restraint” on pay rises. I wonder what HE is earning!!! He is probably in the fortunate position of being ABLE to exercise the “restraint” he urges on others.

But for those watching in horror as their income is eaten up by DAILY increases in petrol prices etc. then restraint is not possible.

Besides, who knows whether this “inflation” perspective is not simply a means to control the pay of the workers! When I first heard that theory as a Tory activist, I dismissed it as socialist nonsense. But now I’m not so sure.

All I know is that my Council Tax is EXACTLY the same this year as it was last year. So if this woman is helping to achieve that then maybe her pay increase is actually cost effective!

I am not judging, merely commenting.
