Working for you all year round??

Time and money...

As many of Eastleigh’s councillors face the polls tomorrow, Eastleigh News can reveal that our borough representatives collectively failed to show up for 20% of their expected attendances over the last electoral year.

Information on the council website show the total number of meetings each councillor was expected to attend and how many they missed.

During the past year the Borough’s 44 councillors have appeared a total of 805 times out of an expected total of 1003 appearences.

The councillors also shared out a total of £353,781 in basic allowances – or an average of £8000 per councillor this is equivalent to an average of £440 per attendance.

The best attenders included three councillors who managed 100% :

The councillor who attended the greatest number of meetings was the Lib Dem councillor for Netley Abbey, David Airey who turned up for 33 of his scheduled 36 meetings.

The full top five were:

The five poorest attendees, who did not always turn up as expected and failed to heed the great example set by Council Leader Keith House (92%) were as follows:

One Eastleigh voter, 54, who did not wish to be named, reacted angrily to the news saying:

“What a disgrace -most people in Eastleigh don’t get paid if they go sick or fail to turn up for work.

If you only turn up for 56% of your meetings then why should you get 100% of your allowances?”

If you are one of Eastleigh’s 1600 unemployed and you don’t show up at the Job Centre they stop your benefits.”

“We are all in this together”

Following a fraught afternoons number crunching, Eastleigh News has calculated a ‘Value for Money‘ table, based on actual attendances and total basic allowances due.

Putting aside the three members who gave the job 100% (and who are clearly in a league of their own) we decided the councillors offering the best VFM were:

  1. John Caldwell – Conservative
  2. Judith Grajewski – Conservative
  3. Godfrey Olson- Conservative
  4. Cathie Fraser – Liberal Democrat
  5. Grahame Smith – Liberal Democrat

Eastleigh News admin Stephen Slominski  said

“We think lower than average basic allowances plus above average attendance rates make Hiltingbury Conservative group good value for money. Four of the top five VFM councillors are on the same local area committee – they obviously take their duties seriously in Chandlers Ford.”

Grahame Smith’s VFM rating combined with his 92% overall attendance score makes the Lib Dem Chairman of Chandlers Ford & Hiltingbury Local Area Committee the very first Eastleigh News VFM Councillor of the Year!!

Congratulations Cllr Smith!

Grahame Smith - good value for money

If the Tories are so deserving, why don’t they win elections?

Well, this wasn’t intended to be an endorsement of the Tory party.
As explained – the Tories take less out of the public purse but tend to turn up to meetings a lot a more.
Of course, they get fewer allowances because as you say, the Lib Dems are in power here and have got all the juicy jobs but the bottom line is they have better attendances then many Lib Dems who are on MORE money and the Parties overall attendance % is higher too.
Perhaps we should have concentrated on slagging off those who get above average remuneration and have a below average attendance but we didn’t want to upset anyone. 😉
There are some touchy people around.

It goes to prove that – of whatever party – there are those who are genuinely in it because they want to serve their electorate, and those who are in it for prestige/power/pay.

I am NOT a Lib dem supporter in anyway, but I know the Broadhursts personally and can tell you their commitment is genuine. However I would not want to vouch for others.

Why do the LDs do well here even when they are thankfully crumbling in the rest of the country? The other parties simply do not match the LD electoral machine. And for reasons beyond my understanding the electorate here believe what they read hook, line and sinker.

There has been (mainly) positive feedback to this story.
Councillors all tell us what a great job they are doing but we have no way of measuring this for ourselves.
looking are what they are paid – and how often they attend – is a good start.
This information is on the council website but not in a form which is easy to understand – a table or spreadsheet showing attendance and renumeration would be good – and could perhaps encourage better performance.
Of course these two indicators don’t tell the full story.
For example Louise Bloom doesn’t figure very well in the table but she does also attend a lot of other meetings and events connected with her cabinet brief which don’t show up here.
It was noticeable though, that some of those members who are paid the least – turn up the most!
