Eastleigh to play host to Falkland Islands

Falkland Islands Football League

Eastleigh FC will be facing up to some ‘International’ competition when they play the Falkland Islands in a friendly at the Silverlake later this month.

Meanwhile Eastleigh’s director of football Dave Malone has confirmed the new contracts of five Eastleigh players, one of whom is Eastleigh’s last season’s top goal scorer Jamie Slabber with 25 goals and Richard Gillespie who is still in contract.

Dave Malone wrote on the fans forum.

“We have now completed the re-signings of the following players:

Tom Jordan

Jamie Slabber

Danny Smith

Ross Bottomley

Gareth Barfoot

Richard Gillespie is already under Contract for the coming season.

We did offer terms to both Tony Taggart and Chris Holland – both of whom appear to have declined, and taken (in their words) “better financial offers” elsewhere.

We are in talks with several players with BSS experience, and so far we have offered terms to 3 other potential full time players. We anticipate around 25 further players attending our next assessment days in the middle of this month.”

Eastleigh New Contracts

The Spitfires have confirmed two pre season friendlies against The Falkland Islands on Wednesday 22nd June at the BTC Ground on Stoneham Lane at 3PM.

The Falkland Islands are due to play in the NatWest Island games in the Isle of White from June 25th until 1st July so this would be a good preparation match for the ‘Oilers’ and a chance for the new Eastleigh hopefuls to shine.

The Spitfires will also play Bashley (Richard Gillespie’s former club) away at the Recreation Ground on 12th July. kick off time will be 19:45 PM.

The Spitfires will arrange dates and times for pre season friendlies against Southampton and Reading at the Silverlake Stadium.

That’s two great pieces of news Kieran.
The club gets to hang on to some of it’s strongest players and gets to play an international friendly!
It’s fitting they should play here as there is a sizeable Falkland Island ex-pat community in the area.
In fact I used to work with one ‘kelper’, Gerry McKay at the old ‘Roadline’ depot in Dutton lane (during the falklands war) and his wife ‘Skittle’also an Islander, was one of the first female bus drivers in Eastleigh.
Another notable local ex-pat is Rock Bernsten who used to work at Solent Canners down the docks but also was a folk singer/guitarist and used to play at the Joiners in the 80’s.
