A Girlguiding UK member and leader of the 5th Chandlers Ford Rainbows is getting ready to embark on a journey of a lifetime later this year when she travels to Latvia to take part in an exciting community development project.
Travelling alongside five other Girlguiding UK members, Lucy Summers from Eastleigh will participate in the Guiding Overseas Linked with Development scheme – otherwise known as GOLD.
She will travel to Latvia for several weeks this summer and will take part in a range of vital community development projects.
The GOLD project has been one of the core opportunities open to Girlguiding UK members between the ages of 17 and 30 since its inception 21 years ago, with participants travelling as far afield as Honduras, Madagascar, Russia, South Africa and Thailand.
Lucy, 28, is working hard to raise funds ahead of her trip to Latvia, including Brownie Disco, a book sale, an Easter raffle and a table-top sale, and is already learning to speak Latvian ahead of her trip.
“I originally got involved in GOLD because I wanted to help Guiding grow in other countries, and to be part of a unique cultural experience in another country.
I’m really looking forward to the project in Latvia – most of all I can’t wait to see people benefit from what I’ve learned through Guiding over the years, but I’m also looking forward to having lots of fun of course!”
