Local plan puts up Council Tax

Botley residents are facing an increase in their council tax due to the cost of fighting Eastleigh Borough Council’s local housing plan.

In a survey of residents sponsored by the parish council last October, 96% of respondents said they were opposed to an extra 1400 new homes being built on Boorley Green.

The Parish council have decided to put aside a ‘fighting fund’ of £15,000 to fund professional advice and representation in case it becomes necessary to oppose the plans at the public enquiry on behalf of the community

This has resulted in a 2.27% increase in the precept or £2.21 for an average band D house.

The council have written to residents describing their actions as:

“Representing and supporting the community in a responsible and cost effective way.”

How ironic! Just before the 2010 general election, Tory bigwigs stormed in to Boorley Green to persuade local voters (mostly Conservatives) that if they voted Tory, the plan for mass housing would be shelved (because Cameron would put a stop to mass immigration). What they didn’t tell voters was, that Cameron CAN’T stop the mass immigration of cheap EU labour, because as long as we are under the EU, our borders remain open to every EU citizen. Had conservatives voted for UKIP, at least they would have voted for their conscience rather than for “cast iron Cameron” whose promises melt away to nothing.

The premise behind building at Boorley Green and Woodhouse Lane was that the new roads would ease the additional congestion.

As the Botley Bypass has been dropped (again), that should really mean that the plans for the houses are dropped too…

I bet it doesn’t. We’ll get thousands of new homes and no new roads, so Botley’s fighting fund will still be needed.

With such a key component of the development strategy being dropped, the local plan needs to go back to the drawing board really…
