Eastleigh’s MP Chris Huhne is giving a boost to the local Liberal Democrat campaign claims their leader Keith House.
As campaigning for the local elections enters its last day Cllr House has described in a article in the Guardian how:
Huhne’s stepping down from the cabinet had helped rather than hindered the local party because he was dedicating more time to his constituency work and is “a very good doorstep campaigner”.
Mr Huhne has previously spoken of how much he enjoys campaigning in Eastleigh;
“Eastleigh is one of the sunniest constituencies in the whole country. When I come back to the commons after our local election campaign every spring, I usually have a suntan and people think I’ve been on holiday – but actually I’ve just been out on the doorstep in Eastleigh”
The former Energy minister stepped down from the Coalition cabinet to answer charges of perverting the course of justice and is due to stand trial this summer alongside his former wife whom he left for his press officer after admitting an affair.
His new partner Carina Trimmingham has been in court herself recently, suing the Daily Mail for the coverage they gave to her private life at the time of the Huhne marriage split
During the course of the trial Ms Trimmingham admitted she had sent out the infamous briefing entitled ‘Calamity Clegg’ when Chris Huhne was challenging Nick Clegg for the party leadership – a document that Mr Huhne denied all knowledge of when confronted on the BBC politics show.
Nick Clegg himself appeared on radio 5 yesterday to insist that despite last poor showing by his party in last year’s locals, Liberal Democrats are finally “getting a hearing”.
Political pundits believe the Lib Dems will face a ‘bloodbath’ at the polls tomorrow with some polls showing support for the party below Ukip.
Polling in Eastleigh for the local elections gets underway tomorrow May 3.
