Diamond Jubilee celebrated at Velmore Centre

Diamond Jubilee dress at the Velmore Centre

The recently extended and refurbished Velmore Centre was put to very good use this afternoon with a Jubilee Party. It was one of many events being held around the Borough of Eastleigh today, to commemorate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee.

But the party at Velmore was a double celebration. First opened in 1968, the Velmore Chapel in Falkland Road has been extended and refurbished over the last six months to create a combined Church and Community Centre. The impressive new facilities were unveiled three weeks ago and today’s celebration was one of the first major events to be held here.

The afternoon kicked-off with some craft activities for the youngsters, followed by a Fancy Dress Competition, a Glamorous Grandmother contest and a Knobbly Knees competition (Eastleigh News declined to enter!) followed by party games for the children and a sing-along featuring the nations favourites, Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia and Jerusalem…

Summer Chalk (aged 10). Queen for the afternoon...

Food was then served to the guests, an impressive spread which was enjoyed by everybody, but only after the Pastor, Bob Dibb, read the special “Grace” that has been prepared for the Diamond Jubilee, approved by Her Majesty and which the clergy of all denominations are encouraged to read at street parties across the country this weekend.

After the food, the evening comprised an excellent disco which Velmore’s young children, and even the two “Bobbies on the beat” who stopped by to say hello, seemed to enjoy.

Excellent homemade cakes...!
