Stephen Gough, the Naked Rambler who has spent the best part of six years in jail for refusing to wear clothes, will remain in prison until August 23 following his appearance in Kirkcaldy Sherriff court this afternoon.

Mr Gough, 53, was charged that he had “conducted himself in a disorderly manner and committed a breach of the peace” by walking naked in Townhill near Dunfermline close to a children’s play area, and refusing to put on clothing or move away from the park.

Mr Gough had been released from prison in Perth on Tuesday but was arrested in Dunfermline on Friday as he attempted to walk home to Eastleigh where he has children

Representing himself the former Royal Marine, still unclothed, gave his address as Eastleigh and pleaded not guilty. He did not apply for bail.

Presiding Sheriff Mungo Bovey has set a trial date for 23 August.

It require courage to do what Steve has done. Alas he was bound to come to grief in Scotland. The prudishness there is staggering (and I speak as a 3/4 Scot). Steve is not merely a pioneer but above all a dissident. Of course in this Orwellian EU Britain, that is enough to get you banged up these days.
