A super slimmer from Eastleigh has been congratulated on her inspirational weight loss by Dancing on Ice winner and Emmerdale actor Matthew Wolfenden at the semi-finals of a national slimming competition, before skating into the final 10 of the contest.

After losing 9st ½lb, Jo Jackson earned a place as one of 47 women from across the UK and Ireland to reach the finals of Slimming World’s Woman of the Year 2012 competition. At the semi-finals she was chosen as one of just 10 women to go forward to the national finals, putting her in the running to win the overall title Slimming World Woman of the Year 2012 and a once-in-a-lifetime holiday to St Lucia.

Jo Jackson – before her diet

Hunky Matthew, who plays David Metcalfe in the Yorkshire soap and was nominated for sexiest male at the British Soap Awards earlier this year, knows only too well the thrill of a good competition since he skated his way to victory on ITV1’s Dancing on Ice. He was on hand at the organisation’s head office in Derbyshire on Sunday (October 7) to help all of the semi-finalists to celebrate their amazing achievements.

Jo, 36, has slimmed down from 19st ½lb to a gorgeous 10st since she joined the Eastleigh Slimming World group in March 2011. The group, which is run by Slimming World Consultant Lorraine Westall, meets at Cranbury Road Community Centre every Monday at 9.15am, 11.15am, 5.30pm and 7.30pm. Jo’s weight loss and new-found confidence inspired her fellow members to vote her as their representative in the annual Woman of the Year competition. After winning the regional heat, she secured a place in the national semi-finals and now she’s made the top 10 finalists.

She says:

“Slimming World was completely different to how I’d expected. I did have to make changes to the way that I cooked and ate, of course, but they were small changes made easy at Slimming World.  I loved tucking into delicious healthy meals and watching the pounds fall off. It was great to prepare meals that suited my family and friends too so we’ve all benefited from eating more healthily – and often they couldn’t believe they were eating ‘healthy’ food!

“If ever my motivation did start to fade, my Consultant and the rest of the group were there to remind me how far I’d come. Each week we talk about coping with different challenges coming up and share recipes, practical advice and handy tips like offers we’ve seen in local supermarkets. We laugh a lot too and I love going to the group every week, I’ve made so many friends. Thanks to them – and my weight loss – I’m a more confident person as well as a slimmer one.”

Lorraine, who runs the Eastleigh Slimming World group which Jo attends, says:

“Jo is not only looking fab, she’s a brilliant example of the difference making changes to your eating habits and getting more active can make. She’s added years to her life and her success is inspiring other people in the group and Eastleigh to turn their health around and help us beat obesity in the area.”

Matthew, who has been busy celebrating Emmerdale’s 40th anniversary this month, says:

“Obesity is never out of the news so for Jo to be making the headlines for all the right reasons is brilliant. Taking up skating for Dancing on Ice proved to me that it’s never too late to try something new and Jo is proof of that too, since joining Slimming World she’s obviously completely changed her life – and she looks great!”

Jo and the nine other finalists will take to the stage at a glittering event in Birmingham next month to find out who will be named Slimming World Woman of the Year 2012.
