Richard Hill’s Spitfires will look to bounce back in the FA Cup 3rd qualifying round away to Gloucester City tomorrow at Cheltenham Town’s ground Whaddon Road (3pm kick off) after a 6-2 thrashing away to Farnborough on Tuesday.
Hill made five changes to his squad that won against Hayes & Yeading last Saturday including three defensive changes; Mitchell Nelson, Gary Elphick and Adam Everitt all featured in Eastleigh’s starting line up and it took just five minutes before the hosts Farnborough took the advantage.
Dan Bennett put The Yellows in front with a left footed strike past Jack Dovey who got a leg to it however it was not enough and just over fifteen minutes later Nic Ciardini fired home a free-kick from the edge of the box that got deflected by the Eastleigh wall.
Just four minutes later Moses Ademola halved Farnborough’s advantage, Marvin Williams done superbly to take it round the Farnborough defence and to put Ademola through on goal and the former Woking striker took it round keeper Craig Bradshaw and shot into an empty net which just dribbled over the line.
That one goal advantage soon doubled again just eight minutes later, after a series of brave blocks from the Eastleigh defence, Reece Connolly fired his side into 3-1 advantage going to the second half.
Hill made two substitutes at half time including Tom Jordan and Jai Reason coming on for Gary Elphick and Marvin Williams and it took just over Fifteen minutes into the second half for Connolly to earn his brace in an incredible three minutes of football.
A long ball was sent to the striker and the Aldershot Town loanee fired past keeper Jack Dovey to put his side 4-1 up.
Two minutes later Josh Huggins slotted past Dovey to put his side 5-1 up and Mitchell Nelson made a last ditch challenge one minute later witch ended up in the back of the net to put Farnborough 6-1 up.
Second half substitute Jai Reason had his say on match when Dale Binns found the former Braintree Town midfielder who turned and done brilliantly to find the net and to reduce the advantage to four goals.
Tomorrow’s opponents Gloucester City sit in 17th place in the Blue Square Bet North having earned ten points from ten games however their last game saw them beat Bishop’s Stortford 5-1 on Tuesday.
Bristol Rover’s loanee Mitch Harding fired The Tigers in front after just two minutes and just four minutes later another Bristol Rover’s loanee Jordan Goddard doubled Gloucester’s advantage.
Former Spitfire Chris Holland then made it 3-0 under ten minutes of the game being played before the centre back claimed his brace just two minutes before the break.
Ricky Sappleton did manage to get one back for the visitors however defender Tom Hamblin made it 5-1 for The Tigers who will be in good spirit for tomorrow’s game.
The Spitfires have played Gloucester City in the FA Cup before, they overturned a 2 goal deficit in the 2nd qualifying round with a 3-2 victory at The Silverlake Stadium six years ago with Jamie Brown (now at Gosport Borough) netting for Eastleigh and Andy Forbes who bagged brace.
