Police at Hedge End are warning residents of the area to be on the look out for distraction burglars who are offering to buy jewellery.
One thief struck about 1.30pm Wednesday, August 21, at West End, where a block of flats for elderly residents had all the front doors open for painting.
At one flat, he asked a 79-year-old woman if she had any jewellery to sell. She offered a brooch and gold earrings. While she was looking for items in a drawer, the man took a gold chain worth £600.
The thief is described as a white man with very dark hair who is about 45 years old and 5ft 6ins tall. He wore a plain beige anorak and dark trousers.
Police are advising residents to be wary of cold callers who offer to buy and/or sell items. Except when doors have been painted, they also reminded residents of the need to keep doors secure, even when the occupants are at home.
Police want to hear from anyone who already has had such callers or who encounters them in the future.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police at Hedge End on 101.
