The Council has announced the death of another former Mayor, Mrs Bobbie Jones, just two days after her colleague Mrs Doreen Wellfare passed away.
Bobbie Jones represented the Borough’s Chandler’s Ford Ward as a Conservative Councillor for eight years from 1988 to 1996 and was elected Mayor of Eastleigh in 1994-95.
During her Mayoral year her charity appeal raised money for Wessex Children’s Hospice Trust Appeal, Netley Waterside House and the Inshore Rescue Team based at Hamble.
Mrs Jones was Chairman of the Council’s Leisure Services Committee and was also a founder member of the Chandler’s Ford Business & Professional Women’s Club.
The current Mayor of Eastleigh Tony Noyce said:
“We are all very sad to hear the news that Bobbie has passed away. She was a well-respected Councillor and Mayor and a great servant to the residents of Chandler’s Ford and the wider borough.
Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this sad time.”
The leader of Eastleigh’s Conservative group Cllr Godfrey Olson paid tribute to the late conservative member who he remembered having a “ bright and lively” character and a liking for hats.
Cllr Olson told Eastleigh News:
“She always undertook her tasks conscientiously and particularly enjoyed her mayoral year.
It’s a sad loss that she should follow so soon after Doreen Wellfare as they were both together on the council at one time.
It’s very sad that we should lose two former mayors within two days.”
