West End councillor to stand down in May

Cllr David Goodall

It’s been announced that the councillor for West End South, David Goodall, will be standing down from his borough seat in May as he has been appointed as  the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for the Isle of Wight.

Cllr Goodall is also on the EBC  Policy and Performance Committee and also serves as a  West End Parish councillor

Goodall also currently chairs the overview and scrutiny committee of PUSH the multi-council Partnership for Urban South Hampshire.

In 2012 Cllr Goodall stood as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police and Crime Commissioner.

Independent Simon Hayes won the post but Goodall topped the poll in Eastleigh.

David Goodall was born on the Isle of Wight and has strong links there.

Never had any problems with Cllr Goodhall. At least he is polite and professional in the way he goes about his business.
And I am not a Lib Dem supporter.

Maybe he can tunnel to the IOW!

But I guess he is not happy in Eastleigh any more!
    Wish him well.

Maybe he is not happy with the current situation (menage a trois etc). One or two councillors might have principles although they are definitely in a very small minority and most of them are not Lib Dems.

David has always been a conscientious councillor and I am sure will make an excellent candidate for the IOW. However, he is not standing down voluntarily. His term of office expires in 2015. So the announcement is a little misleading. The question is whether he plans to stand for re-election to Eastleigh. There is a 10,000 majority on the island that he needs to turn over unless he wants to retire from active politics. And I seem to recall independent candidates did rather well at the last IOW council elections.

Coincidentally another West End councillor, Bruce Tennent, and David’s deputy on PUSH, is the Lib Dem candidate for New Forest East. Bruce is equally conscientious and I am sure would be excellent as the member for Bucklers Hard. Unlike David, Bruce has three years to run on the borough council. Have the Lib Dems made any announcement about his intentions?
