Greens call for more affordable housing in South East

Ron Meldrum PPC and Keith Taylor MEP

Keith Taylor MEP (R) with Ron Meldrum Green PPC for Eastleigh

Green MEP Keith Taylor was joined by the Green Party candidate for Eastleigh Ron Meldrum yesterday in Winchester for the launch of his new report into the house building shortage entitled:

“Everyone knows we have a housing crisis: lets do something about it.”

The report highlights a lack of local authority house building and argues for more social and affordable housing.

According to the report, houses in the South East now cost 12 times the average national salary and that during 2012 – 2013, no new housing was completed by local authorities in the region.

Keith Taylor commented:

“People have had enough of living in fear not knowing how they are going how they are going to make next months rent.

“This report demonstrates that housing has become unsustainably expensive and that fresh political will and innovative mechanisms are needed to make housing work again.”

Ron Meldrum said:

“The housing crisis continues to grow, and in Hampshire where there is great income inequality it is even more visible.

“We must be cleverer at building affordable homes that are also efficient and we must ensure that social housing is built with its inhabitants in mind – people over profits.

“As with so many things, there is also a relation to education – housing must be sustainable and beneficial to the environment and architecturally designed to be so.”

I’m not convinced we need to build more affordable housing, but I do think we should more effectively regulate the buy-to-let market and the rental sector, so that these extortionate rentals cannot be charged. The problem is greed, rather than lack of housing…

I’m not sure re that Ray? I think we need both. We need social housing built with affordable rents and we need much more strict regulation of the private rented sector. We also need affordable homes to buy for local people.
