A man cycling home from work was set upon by a gang in Hedge End.

Police are appealing for witnesses and have released CCTV images following the attempted robbery on Saturday night (February 5).

The 18-year-old man was cycling along the motorway bridge on St John’s Road, at 10.15pm on when a gang of around six to eight males, who were all dressed in dark clothing, grabbed his arm.

They then punched him in the face several times as they tried to search his pockets and grab hold of his bike but he was able to escape without anything being stolen.

Officers investigating the frightening incident have released CCTV images of a group of males seen in the area at the time of the incident.

Police Staff Investigatore Claire Linton said:

“We are asking people if they recognise anyone in the CCTV images. We appreciate that the CCTV is not that clear but I believe that someone will recognise the group and could assist in identifying them.

“At this time of night it wasn’t busy but there are a number of vehicles on the road, some other cyclists and runners. So we are asking if any of these people saw or heard anything?”

Anyone with information is asked to call PSI Linton on 101, quoting 44160055506, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
