Wildlife campaigner Chris Packham gets CBE

Local Naturalist Chris Packham is one of several Hampshire people who have been honoured in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List.

The BBC TV “Springwatch’ presenter who has long been a passionate campaigner for the protection of wildlife – has been honoured with a CBE for services to nature conservation.

Recently Packham has been sharply critical of Eastleigh Borough Council’s Local Plan – that will see 6,000 new houses built on countryside

Speaking to the BBC about the receiving the honour, Packham is reported to have said he would continue to “shout above the noise” to protect foxes, badgers and birds of prey.

Local charity workers and medical workers were among those honoured.

Cardiologist Prof Huon Gray,from University Hospital Southampton, was appointed a CBE while married couple Graham and Juliette Hewitt, from Gosport, were both awarded the British Empire Medal for their work on behalf of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Hampshire County Councillor Peter Edgar who is the HCC Cabinet member for Education receives an MBE in recognition of his services to Education and the community in Gosport where he also serves as a Borough Councillor.

Two Firefighters from Hampshire Fire and Rescue have also been honoured.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Andrew Bowers and Firefighter Kevin Taylor both receive the Queen’s Fire Service Medal for their distinguished service.

A long serving member of Hampshire’s Special Constabulary has been awarded a BEM.

Special Inspector Ken Avery has been recognised in the New Year’s Honours after almost 45 years of service to policing and the community of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Ken said: “I was amazed, flabbergasted and excited. I feel truly honoured to have been recognised in such a way.

“I’ve never been in this for the accolades and never thought my name would ever be on the New Year’s Honour list, I just wanted to help my community.”
