Comedian Alistair McGowan – best known for his impressions of celebrities such as David Beckham, Jonathan Ross and Gary Lineker – shines on the piano in his inspirational show, Introductions to Classical Piano, which heads to Theatre Royal Winchester on Saturday 4 May.
Last year McGowan found chart-topping success with his debut album, The Piano Album (released through Sony Classical), which saw him performing solo pieces from composers including Chopin and Bach; before he took to the stage for a UK-wide tour, which stunned audiences.
The show now returns to delight yet more classical music fans and sees the stand up and actor play a host of pieces, from his album and more, and talk about each piece, its composer, and the pros and cons of learning to play the piano at 49. McGowan – whose BBC One show, Big Impressions, won a BAFTA – had known how to play just two pieces when he learnt in the space of nine months those pieces that appear on his album, and he hopes his show will encourage others to take up an instrument.
The evening promises beautiful music as well as a smattering of his trademark impressions.
