Reda Johnson struck the only goal as Eastleigh got their National League play-off bid back on track by beating Gateshead 1-0 at The Silverlake Stadium in front of 1698 spectators.
Ben Strevens’ Spitfires had gone into the game on the back of three successive defeats but took the lead in the 15th minute when defender Johnson nodded Sam Matthews’ cross into the top corner.
Gateshead went close to levelling six minutes later, but Scott Barrow’s 20-yard free-kick ricocheted off the post.
It was a very gritty and brave display from Eastleigh as they looked to secure their slender lead.
Greg Olley and Mike Williamson nearly levelled for Gateshead – who fell to a fifth defeat in a six-match winless run – in the second half while Paul McCallum headed wide at the other end for Eastleigh.
Eastleigh have now three games left in the league left as they now sit four points clear in that all important last play-off spot.
The Spitfires now take on Dagenham & Redbridge on Good Friday as they look to extend and potentially secure their play-off spot.
