Ben Strevens’ Spitfires confirmed their place in the Vanarama National League play-offs with a 2-0 Vanarama National League win over Maidenhead United at Silverlake Stadium in front of 2146 fans!
Eastleigh took the lead just short of the half hour when Mike Fondom-Talom handled in the area. The division’s second-top scorer Paul McCallum found the top left corner from the penalty spot, his 26th of an impression season.
The second goal got the home crowd off their feet as a majestic winding run and chip by Mark Yeates saw Eastleigh double their advantage.
Half time saw the announcement of 110 fans from Baltimore, America, attending the stadium, and they certainly picked a good game to attend!
In the second half, Luke Southwood helped to preserve the Spitfires’ cushion with a smothering save to deny Seth Ofori-Twumasi bearing down on him.
Mike Fondop also sent a dangerous header into Southwood’s direction but he on hand to save again and with some help of some brave Eastleigh defenders, the keeper kept an important clean sheet to secure a vital 2-0 win.
There was a guard of honour at the end of the match as fans gave Eastleigh a standing ovation.
Eastleigh are now six points clear off the play-offs with one game remaining as they take on Boreham Wood in their final game of the scheduled season. With sixth place now the target, Ben Strevens’ Spitfires will play their play-off match on either 1st or 2nd May.
