Eastleigh students celebrate success at City College annual awards

Jamie Marshallsay

Two students from Eastleigh are celebrating after taking home awards at City College Southampton’s annual awards.

Jamie Marshallsay won the accolade for Academic Achievement and was also shortlisted for Young Student of the Year.  Shane Mullen won a recognition award for his desire to improve his knowledge and skills within the care sector while working voluntarily with autistic adults.

Jamie joined the college in 2017 having left school with no qualifications and was fast-tracked through his functional skills joining the Level 2 Barbering course in 2018, his dream goal.  Jamie has been recognised for his significant progress, successfully balancing working and studying to not only achieve his barbering qualification but also pass his GCSE Maths.

Tina Arey, Hairdressing and Barbering Teacher said:

‘During his industry placement at Johnjos Barbers, the owner was so impressed with Jamie’s skills and attitude that he not only provided him with a glowing reference but also helped him secure full-time work at a local barbershop and we’re so proud of how far he has come.’

Shane Mullen demonstrated his incredible dedication by completing five distance learning courses to a very high standard and continuing his desire to help others, is about to embark on a counselling qualification with City College.

Emma Byrne, Workforce Skills Delivery Manager said:

‘The variety of courses which Shane has completed has updated and improved his knowledge and expertise in the autistic field, these include children and young people’s mental health needs, behaviour that challenges, care planning and working with adults with mental health needs, and understanding autism and dementia care.  His commitment to better himself is fantastic.’

Students, parents, businesses and VIPs gathered at City College Southampton recently for its annual awards evening to celebrate the significant successes of over 50 of its students and the achievements of staff, and to thank two major businesses for their contribution to the College.

The evening gave students first-hand experience in organising and running a high quality, Oscar-style awards event. Production Arts students designed and managed the stage, lighting and sound; Media students filmed throughout the evening and Hospitality students created and served a delicious menu of street food. Guests were also entertained by Performing Arts students with two magical performances from Frozen: the Broadway Musical.

City College Principal Sarah Stannard welcomed The Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Peter Baillie, students and their families and expressed pride in the outstanding success of the College over the last 12 months. She announced that not only had there been an improvement in student results for the fourth consecutive year, but also that the numbers of students applying for full-time and part-time courses this autumn had increased, resulting in many courses being full.

‘Our Annual Awards is a fantastic event where we are able to celebrate the determination of our students and staff to be the very best they can be.  Everyone at City College is very proud of what our students achieve and that we help develop the knowledge and skills which enable them to achieve a bright future.’
