“Innocent until proven guilty”

huhne politics show

under pressure

Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne, who has had allegations regarding his speeding offences investigated by Police, has hinted that he would not resign his Cabinet seat if charged.

Asked by Andrew Neil on the BBC Politics show if he would resign from the cabinet if charged Mr Huhne, currently attending the Lib Dem party conference, said:

“I much prefer to have trial properly by one’s peers and assumed to be innocent until proven guilty”

“I don’t think that will arise. ..that particular situation.”

The MP has strenuously denied the allegations that he persuaded his former wife economist Vicky Pryce to take speeding points on his behalf since the story emerged in the Sunday Times last May.

It is understood that the CPS are due to rule on whether there are grounds to charge Mr Huhne within the next few weeks.

Mr Huhne also told Andrew Neil he was sure that the CPS “would draw a line under the whole matter.”

I imagine it must be quite a strain having to live with the prospect of being prosecuted for the alledged offence of having somebody take the points for a speeding offence. Indeed, for any minister to publicly say that it is the fault of the homeowner that we are paying such high fuel bills, only goes to highlight the stress of the matter.

Mr Huhne is of course quite right to say that he is innocent until proven guilty. If the source from within Essex police is right as been quoted as saying that he cant understand why the CPS are not acting, it does lean one towards thinking perhaps there is no smoke without fire. All will be revealed I’m sure!!!

Sir Humphry Appleton would probably say that the ministers stand on this matter is… quite courageous…
