Eastleigh Borough Council has announced that as from today (12 December) there will no longer be a charge to park in Eastleigh’s Swan Centre car parks in the evenings (from 6pm) giving local people the opportunity to park for free while they enjoy the town’s leisure facilities including a cinema, gym, bowling alley and a range of restaurants.
The announcement came as a surprise last minute addition at last night’s council meeting although Council Leader Keith House said it was a move the council had contemplated for some time.
In a press release the Council said it is:
“Committed to regenerating town centres and encouraging a thriving local economy and believes that, by ceasing parking charges after 6pm, it will help the town centre respond to growing competition and help the leisure businesses to thrive.”
Cabinet lead for the Economy, Cllr Derek Pretty, said :
“By providing free car parking in the evening, the Council is confirming its commitment to the town centre and its businesses. It will give visitors a more affordable evening out and we hope that more people will come and enjoy all that the town centre has to offer in the evening.”
Free parking in the Swan Centre will apply every evening from 6pm and is for both the ground floor and upper level parking in the Swan Centre car parks.
