A man had his shoulder broken during an ‘serious and unprovoked assault’ outside the Swan Centre.

The victim was attacked outside the Tesco Metro supermarket Saturday evening (August 3) and four people are on bail having been arrested in connection with the incident.

The victim, a 23-year-old Southampton man, had spent the evening with friends at a fair. Around 9.30pm, as he approached Tesco, he thought he recognised someone in a group of people sat on the round bench outside the supermarket.

He called over and, as he passed by, he was assaulted by a number of people and fell to the floor. He was further punched and kicked before the group ran off towards the bowling alley.

The victim was taken by ambulance to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester, for treatment to a broken shoulder and later discharged.

Three men (one aged 23, two aged 19) and a 21-year-old woman all from Eastleigh were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and bailed until September pending further police enquiries.

DC Scott Spafford from Eastleigh CID said:

“This is a very serious and unprovoked assault in which a man has ended up with a broken shoulder.

“It occurred at 9.30pm before the supermarket and some of the restaurants in that part of Eastleigh town centre closed.

“I’m hoping, therefore, that would still have been people around who saw what happened, saw where the group ran off to or who have any information that could assist our enquiries.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact DC Spafford at Eastleigh police station on 101 or the anonymous Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
