Hedge End Carnival Committee have announced that the annual fireworks display and fun fair, which was scheduled to take place this weekend, Saturday 15th November, has been cancelled.
The unfortunate news has also been announced on the Hedge End Town Council website.
Although it was not on the agenda, there was a brief discussion prior to the Recreation & Amenities Committee meeting this evening.
The cancellation is due to the saturated conditions at Greta Park, which is currently unsuitable to take the heavy vehicles and the large crowd. Rather than destroy Greta Park, turn it into a quagmire (as pictured above) and subsequently have the problem of repairing the ground, the event has been cancelled early.
Such cancellations are not completely unprecedented, but they are rare. Hedge End’s fireworks normally do go ahead despite the weather, but the forecast is for more rain on top of that which we have already had, with the possibility of lightning on Saturday evening.
Prior to the meeting, the current Chairman of Hedge End Town Council, Cllr Baynes, revealed to the committee members who were present that in her report for the next edition of the Hedge End Gazette, she has said how much she enjoyed the fireworks. Cllr Baynes then asked if the next edition of the Gazette has already gone to the printers? She was told that it had.
There was much amusement at the misfortune, including from Cllr Baynes herself, but it was unclear whether that page could be changed at this late stage…
